In 1878, rich silver ore was discovered in the hills North of Silver Cliff. The population quickly swelled to 6,000 people. Westcliffe was created as a supply town for booming Silver Cliff. Little remains of the “Glory Days,” other than tailing piles on the hills overlooking the twin villages.

Rainbow Trail

The Rainbow trail winds and meanders through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to abandoned mines, grand vistas, 14,000 feet peaks, and 52 lakes. It is one of America’s premier trails.

Cripple Creek

Golden Corner Suites Motel is 92 miles for the casinos of Cripple Creek. This is a great day trip from the Motel. The drive is a lazy one, over spiraling, winding mountain country roads, but the splendor will make your heart flutter.

Royal Gorge

The Old West’s largest theme park, Royal Gorge is a scenic one-hour drive from Golden Corner Suites Motel. Journey back to the old frontier at Buckskin Joe’s, and authentically restored 1860’s mining town, tour the San Isabel mine, pan for gold, or ride a horse through town. You’ll have a bunch of old fashioned fun at Royal Gorge.

Ghost Towns

Nearby are the “ghost” towns of Rosita and Querida and the mysterious La Caverna Del Oro – the cave of gold that some historians contend furnished the precious metal to Aztec Indians in Huitzilopotchli (what is now Mexico City). A feast of lore and fact entertains amateur historians, and ghost town and mining historians.

The Legend

As legend has it, about 1670, Spanish Conquistadors with their priests were traveling through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains when they were attacked by a band of Blackfoot Indians. As the priest lay dying he looked upon the mountains bathed in the red glow of sunset, and his last words were, “I have seen the blood of Christ!” - Sangre de Cristo
